After their dramatic improvement last season, the Houston Texans have proven themselves as a dominant force in the NFL. While the offense looks like it is going to be a force of nature next season under elite quarterback C.J. Stroud, the defense looks like it has some problems including the secondary. Houston certainly had the motivation to attack the secondary at some point in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Houston Texans Pick up Elite Cornerback in the 2024 NFL Draft
Well it looks like Houston finally went after their big defensive player when they selected University of Georgia cornerback Kamari Lassiter with the 42nd overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Kamara was a lockdown corner for the Bulldogs last season and proved that he had the potential to be an NFL corner.
Lassiter was an outstanding cornerback with Georgia last season and proved that he has the raw athleticism and talent to be a superstar at the next level. The only red flags that have come up for Lassiter is that he doesn’t have that killer instinct to make interceptions or big plays for the defense. He also struggles with his top end speed to chase down deep routes from faster receivers.
Lassiter will pair perfectly with elite cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. on a Houston defense that is rapidly getting both faster and younger. Clearly that is a major point of Head Coach Demeco Ryans after he played the linebacker position for this defense for his entire career.
Lassiter received mixed praise from an unnamed NFL Scout who gave the following appraisal: “Ball production is pretty so-so, but I think some of that was just how Georgia handled their coverages. He’s tough. Plays hard.” – AFC regional scout
Houston is looking forward to putting up excellent numbers next season and boosting the Texans and their defense to a whole new level.
